Research on multiple malnutrition burdens in children under 5 in West Africa presented at symposium

Transform Nutrition West Africa presented the poster Multiple malnutrition burdens in children under 5 in West Africa at the recent International symposium on understanding the double burden of malnutrition for effective interventions – IAEA Headquarters, Vienna 10-13 December 2018. This research shows that West African countries experience multiple types of undernutrition in U5 children, whilst the burden of U5 overweight/obesity is increasingly prevalent alongside.

The purpose of the symposium, which is co-organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is to strengthen the understanding of how to address the DBM by sharing recent research findings and country experience with implementing relevant policies and programme interventions. The symposium aims to identify double-duty actions that address both sides of malnutrition through common interventions.
